Introduction to Scrum Course
Northern Shore provides a ready-made, day long, 'Introduction to Scrum' training course suitable for Developers, Testers, Designers, Analysts or anyone involved in delivering software. The course contains the following content;
Context and History
Starting with a short introduction to the world of software development sets the scene about why we build software and what we're looking to achieve. We take a brief look at Waterfall development methodologies and move on to the Agile Manifesto and the principals that form the bedrock of agile development.
Nuts and Bolts of Scrum
Seeking to introduce people to the mechanics of using Scrum for software development we go through the various roles involved in the process and delve into all of the associated meetings and artifacts. It's also important to get across how fundamental continuous improvement is to Scrum and how to always inspect and adapt.
Estimating and Planning
There are a lot of important tools and techniques that go along quite well with Scrum. This includes User Stories and the use of Story Points and Planning Poker to estimate. We also look at release planning as a way of providing some guidance as to where a project is going.
It's important not to be a slave to the 'official' Scrum process but instead be willing to adapt to what suits your organisation and situation. We explore issues like geographically separated teams and scaling as well as looking at some useful tools.
The course includes a range of exercises and interactive sessions throughout including a go at Planning Poker and a simulation of the Scrum process.
The course is an alternative to more costly and time consuming ScrumMaster training and can be tailored to the needs of your organisation. If you're interested in either running this course inside your organisation or attending a public version of the course please get in touch to discuss.
Training is provided by Northern Shore director Jon McNestrie. Having worked as a developer, team leader and project manager and all round software consultant for many of the IT companies in the North East of England Jon has gained a lot of experience in building and developing software teams and delivery and knowing what works and what doesn't.
Jon is a Scrum Alliance Certified ScrumMaster, Certified Scrum Product Owner and a Certified Scrum Professional; one of very few in the region. Also the founder and organiser of the Agile North East group and experienced in the delivery of many talks, workshops and training courses over the years. Jon is a passionate advocate of Agile Software Delivery and an experienced Scrum Practitioner.
An off the shelf training course may not suite your organisation or audience for many reasons. If you feel you need something truly bespoke to fit your needs then we'll be happy to work closely with you to devise something that works.
